The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) is undergoing significant changes, and enforcement is ramping up in 2025. Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and avoid penalties:

🚛 What Is DVS?

The Direct Vision Standard is part of Transport for London’s (TfL) Vision Zero initiative, aiming to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads by 2041. It applies to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 12 tonnes operating in Greater London and measures how much a driver can see directly through their cab windows, assigning a star rating from 0 (poor) to 5 (excellent).

📅 Key Dates

  • October 28, 2024: Original enforcement date for updated DVS requirements.
  • May 4, 2025: Final enforcement begins. The grace period ends, and non-compliant vehicles will face penalties.

✅ New Requirements

To operate in Greater London without fines:

  • HGVs must have a minimum three-star rating, or
  • Be equipped with a Progressive Safe System (PSS) if rated zero, one, or two stars.

🛠️ What’s in the Progressive Safe System?

  • Blind Spot Information Systems (BSIS): Alerts drivers to road users in blind spots.
  • Moving Off Information Systems (MOIS): Detects pedestrians/cyclists near the front when starting.
  • Side Underrun Protection: Prevents vulnerable road users from being dragged under wheels.
  • Enhanced Mirror or Camera Monitoring Systems (CMS): Improves visibility of hidden areas.

⚠️ Common Pitfalls

  • Buying non-compliant “DVS kits” online.
  • Failing to install systems to TfL specifications.
  • Missing the deadline and risking Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).
